Senator Schatz Statement on Supreme Court Consideration of Marriage Equality

Statement

Date: April 28, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai"i) released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments on same-sex marriage.

"Equality and fairness are basic principles we all can understand," said Senator Schatz. "Today, as the Supreme Court begins to hear arguments on marriage equality, I am confident it will rule that marriage equality is a constitutional right. Committed couples, whether they are gay or straight, deserve to be treated equally under the law. The Supreme Court has the opportunity to make history and do what is right."

A strong, long-time supporter of marriage equality, Senator Schatz signed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in March 2013, urging the Court to strike down the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that barred same-sex marriage.
